Southeast of downtown Columbia, Missouri is the neighborhood of The Woodlands. The Woodlands consists of contemporary medium-large to large homes on large lots. The main road gently curves south to north with off-shooting curving roads ending in cul-de-sacs. There is still some construction on the eastern side of the neighborhood. Some of the lots are wide open with lush green lawns while others are heavily wooded. U.S. Route 63 is nearby to the south and east.
Nearby and to the northwest of The Woodlands is the campus of the University of Missouri. Also known as “Mizzou,” this university is known not only for its prime athletic programs in football and basketball, but as being one of only six public universities to have programs in law, medicine, and veterinary medicine all on one campus. Mizzou has a well-earned reputation for excellence in teaching and research.
The popular Bennigan’s Restaurant couples American style fare with Irish hospitality. They are known for their one-half pound build-your-own burgers and “full-pint (with a little bit more)” beers.
The Missouri Golf Association has ranked The Club at Old Hawthorne as being 12th in the state and is the home of the University of Missouri’s golf team. It is a private club and various types of memberships are available.
Hazel Kinder’s Lighthouse Theatre features both local and national talent in a family-friendly environment. The acts are usually a blend of music and comedy and are sometimes in the form of a dinner theatre.
The 1,200 seat Missouri Theatre plays host to the Missouri Chamber Orchestra, and the Missouri Symphony Society’s Youth Orchestra and Choir. It also hosts concerts and special events throughout the year.
