The Southwest Hills neighborhood, with Hulen Lake in its center, is conveniently located to the many attractions of downtown Columbia, and to top recreational sites in the outlying areas. It is within a mile of Columbia Mall and bound by South Fairview Road, Rollins Road, Maplewood Drive, and Chapel Hill Road. Stadium Boulevard – a major thoroughfare – bisects the area.

It is quite a large neighborhood. Home styles and sizes vary from small brick ranch homes to estate-like homes around Hulen Lake. Much of the area is quite open and natural, with rolling to hilly terrain and heavily-wooded areas.

A. L. Gustin Golf Course is just a couple of miles away and offers quite reasonable play. Perche Creek is only a bit farther and north near I-70. Perche Creek is a good place for families, with an 18-hole par-3 course, driving range, mini golf, batting cages, and Go-Karts.

Less than five miles south is 2,000-acre Rock Bridge State Park. Rock Bridge is a favorite spot, especially in the summer. Touring and exploring the caves is not only exciting – it’s a great way to beat the heat. This park also has 25 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

There are several dog parks in the area. One is at Grindstone Nature Area and there are two at Twin Lakes. Twin Lakes also has a great kids’ water park, beautifully landscaped using lots of native stone. The MKT Trail passes through here, making a trip to Twin Lakes only a fun and easy bike ride away.

The downtown area is brimming with entertainment sites, from lively pubs to avant-garde theater. Downtown is the site for many of Columbia’s festivals. The two-day fall festival known as “Roots ‘N Blues ‘N BBQ” draws crowds, as do the summer concerts.
