Old Hawthorne is a private, residential neighborhood. It’s located within picturesque, rolling hills, while being only a five miles east of downtown Columbia. Most of the homes in the community are single-family, detached houses of varying styles, such as ranch-style units and classic, two-story American homes.

There are plentiful shops, stores, and malls nearby. Furniture Row Shopping Center is four miles northwest of Old Hawthorne, and the North County Shopping Center is about five miles to its northwest. The Ice Chalet Antique Mall is three and a half miles to its west, while Artichoke Annie’s Antique Mall is six miles to its east. Columbia Mall, a major, indoor shopping center, is just under eight miles to its west.

Several restaurants are also within easy driving or biking distance of Old Hawthorne. The Petrus Pantry is two miles to its west. Subway, the popular sandwich chain, and Sonic Drive-In are about two and a half miles to its north. Bennigan’s Grill & Tavern is three miles to its west, and the Chili’s Grill & Bar is three and a half miles to its northwest.

The community is the namesake for The Club at Old Hawthorne, which is a much-praised country club in the neighborhood. Its clubhouse was built in 1938 as a replica of The Hermitage, President Andrew Jackson’s historical home. The golf courses lie on rolling terrain, with wide fairways. Beyond the well-manicured, tree-lined streets of the neighborhood are several local parks as well. The massive Rock Bridge Memorial State Park is just under six miles to its southwest. It offers visitors opportunities for equestrian riding, mountain biking, hiking, cave exploring, picnicking, wildlife watching, and camping.
