Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is a Naval Air Station that was established in 1942. The main portion of the base, Ault Field, is roughly three miles north of Oak Harbor. NAS Whidbey Island has 17 active duty squadrons, two Ready Reserve squadrons, a Search and Rescue Unit, and more than 50 tenant squadrons.
Located roughly 30 miles northwest of Seattle, Whidbey Island is the largest of Island County’s nine islands. The island is about 35 miles long, and NAS Whidbey Island is located at the north end of the island near Oak Harbor. As the island’s largest incorporated city, Oak Harbor is the best option for an apartment near NAS Whidbey. Ruggedly beautiful, island residents enjoy the stunning coastline’s beaches, marinas, and parks. Mainland locations with reasonable commutes include Burlington and Mt. Vernon, both roughly 29 miles from the base.
