Shaw Air Force Base is home to the 20th Fighter Wing, the Air Force’s largest combat F-16 wing. It is also home to the Third Army, U.S. Air Forces Central, and several other tenant units. The base, built in 1941, is located in South Carolina roughly eight miles northwest of Sumter. The base was named for WWI pilot Lieutenant Ervin David Shaw, one of the first American combat pilots. Shaw as killed in action in 1918.
