Built in 1943, McEntire Air Guard Base began as Congaree Army Airfield. During WWII, it was an active base that hosted dive bombing training units for the US army. It was later transferred to the Navy and later to the South Carolina Air National Guard. Today, it is known as McEntire Joint National Guard Base. It is home to the 169th Fighter Wing.
McEntire JNGS is located about 15 miles southeast of Columbia, South Carolina in the town of Eastover. Called “Eastover” because it is “over to the east” of the Congaree River, this tiny town covers about one square mile. It was established in 1880 and offers plenty of southern charm. Be sure to tour Kensington Plantation, built sometime around 1787. Now open to the public, this beautiful house contains 29 rooms and is 12,000 square feet.
