Lakehurst Naval Air Center Area Apartment Housing(hide military information)
While landing at the end of its first North American transatlantic journey only a year after it was built, the Hindenburg caught fire, killing 36 people. It was attempting to land at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. While the Hindenburg tragedy is probably the most famous historic event to take place at the air station, it isn’t the only one to take place – Lakehurst Naval Air Station was built in 1916 as a munitions-testing site for the Imperial Russian Army. The US Army took over and named it Camp Kendrick during WWI. In 1921, it was renamed Naval Air Station when the Navy purchased the property.
The Navy Lakehurst Historical Society chronicles the Hindenburg disaster as well as the station’s history with US Navy blimps and the rigid airships the Shenandoah, Los Angeles, and Akron. Tours are available through the historical society. Today, Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst is part of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. It is located about 25 miles southeast of Trenton and is the Navy’s largest aviation installation. Lakehurst is home to the US Air Force 87th Air Base Wing.
To find an apartment in the Lakehurst NAES area, look in the neighboring community of Lakehurst, Leisure Knoll, or nearby Manchester Township. Historic Toms River, a beautiful community that is considered part of the New York metro area, is just 10 miles southeast.
