Fort Riley Area Apartment Housing
Situated between Junction City and Manhattan along the Kansas River, Fort Riley is an Army post that has been in use since the mid-1800s. Fort Riley was one of several military posts that were established along the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails. The post’s name changed from Camp Center to Fort Riley in 1853. Today, Fort Riley is home to the 1st Infantry Division, the oldest division in the US Army.
Fort Riley is home to several museums, including the Custer Home, a historic house museum built in 1855. The home is unchanged and contains period furniture from the mid to late 1800s. It is an authentic example of military life on the Western frontier. The US Cavalry Museum, also located on the fort, was also built in 1855 as the base hospital.
Fort Riley area apartments can be found in either Junction City or Manhattan. Junction City is located about five miles southwest of Fort Riley, while Manhattan is roughly 13 miles northeast. Other, smaller communities near the base include Ogden and Grandview Plaza.
Junction City is a fast-growing area set within a beautiful landscape wrapped by two rivers – the Smoky Hill River and the Republican River – just before they merge to form the Kansas River. Manhattan is located at the junction of the Kansas River and the Big Blue River and is home to Kansas State University. This busy college town has received many honors, including being named one of the 10 best places in America to retire young by CNN and Money Magazine.
