Operating since 1918, Fort Benning has a long history serving as the Home of the Infantry. This important US Army base is also home to the US Army Armor School and the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. Named for Confederate army general Brigadier General Henry L. Benning, Fort Benning is located in the General’s hometown of Columbus, Georgia.

The base covers 182,000 acres along the Georgia/Alabama border. A small portion of the base extends into Alabama, and the Chattahoochee River runs through the fort. Fort Benning has been the location of several movies, including the 2001 movie Black Hawk Down and the 1967 film, The Green Berets.

For those looking for an apartment to rent in the Fort Benning area, Columbus is a small but busy city located about two hours southwest of Atlanta and two hours west of Macon. It is a postcard-perfect city, ranked among one of the best cities in the US. It is home to the Columbus Airport, Columbus State University, several museums, the beautiful Chattahoochee RiverWalk, Springer Opera House, eight historic districts, more than 50 parks, and a charming downtown. Columbus is known as a hub for fine arts and performing arts. The RiverCenter for the Performing Arts is home to CSU’s music department.
