Located about seven miles north of downtown Milton, Naval Air Station Whiting Field is in a beautiful natural area, with Blackwater Bay and Escambia Bay to the South, Blackwater River State Forest to the east, and the Lower Escambia River Water Management Area to the west. This large base is separated into north and south air fields and has its own golf course, NAS Whiting Field Golf Course. NAS Whiting Field was built in 1943 and is one of the Navy’s two main pilot training bases.
Milton became a city in 1844, making one of the oldest cities in Florida. It is roughly 20 miles northeast of Pensacola along the Blackwater River. The river was once the main transportation route for timber. Today, the city is closely tied to NAS Whiting Field and has a population of about 9,100 residents. It is a terrific small city with a historic downtown district and plenty of outdoor recreation, ranging from fishing, canoeing, and kayaking to the Gulf Coast beaches just a short distance away. When searching for an apartment in the NAS Whiting Field area, anywhere in Milton is ideal, especially toward the north end of the city.
