A center for testing and development of US Army missile programs, Redstone Arsenal has been in use since 1941. It is located along the Tennessee River near Huntsville – an area of wetlands and local springs. The Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge maintains much of the area, which includes several archaeological sites in addition to the springs and wildlife. Redstone Arsenal houses the US Army Materiel Command and the US Army Aviation and Missile Life Cycle Management Command.
Situated on the southwest side of Huntsville, Redstone Arsenal is just south of the University of Alabama at Huntsville. The arsenal is easily reached from Huntsville by I-565.
