Union Hill is a neighborhood in Worcester, Massachusetts in the 01604 zip code. The borders of the neighborhood are Grafton Street on the east, Water Street on the northwest, Vernon and Winthrop Streets on the west, and Heywood Street on the south. This neighborhood has a little bit of everything. It is a residential area that also has commercial enterprises and office buildings. The homes are mostly multi-family and apartment buildings with a few single family homes tucked in. In spite of being inner city there are plenty of trees and open green spaces. There are also several areas that have been designated historic districts with building of significance.
The Vernon Hill Campus of St Vincent Hospital is located in the neighborhood. St Vincent has a history of providing exceptional care in almost every area of medicine. They have a state of the art cancer center, women’s services, and critical care. They offer a sleep lab, pain management center, and pediatrics.
There is a small park on the corner of Dorchester Street and Houghton Street with trees, open space, and a playground. Farther along on Dorchester Street there is another park that has a baseball diamond and bleachers.
There are several public schools in the neighborhood. Worcester East Middle School has a championship sports program and offers a positive education experience for youngsters in grades 7 and 8. Union Hill Elementary School has a student body of 285 students in grades K-6. There are also some private schools; Worcester Academy has a middle school for grades 6-8 and high school 9-12. It is co-educational and about a third of the students board at the school. St Mary’s Junior/Senior High School is a private Catholic School that offers grades 7-12 with a college preparatory curriculum.
