Wyandotte Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
Wyandotte is a neighborhood in southcentral Louisville, Kentucky, about five miles from the heart of the downtown area. This large, primarily residential community is bounded by Longfield Avenue on the north, Interstate 264 on the south, Taylor Boulevard/Highway 1865 on the west, and Southern Parkway/Highway 1020 on the east. Like most of the Louisville area, Wyandotte belongs to Jefferson County, and the zip code here is 40215. Area communities include Jacobs to the west and Wilder Park to the east.
This community spans little more than .69 square miles, and yet it is home to roughly 4,440 residents, making it quite densely populated by city standards. Like much of Louisville, most of the homes here date back to before 1960, with a good portion of the homes constructed prior to 1940. The community takes its name from Wyandotte Park, which in turn was named after the Wyandotte tribe. From 1935-1970, it was considered part of Oakdale; despite being renamed, many long-time residents still refer to this area as Oakdale.
The grid-like streets of Wyandotte are lined with modest, single-family homes. In keeping with the densely populated nature of this community, the homes here are spaced very closely together. Many have detached garages. Some lots have ample shade trees while others are landscaped with just a few small shrubs. Several churches can be found within neighborhood bounds, as well as Semple Elementary School on Denmark Street. There are few commercial offerings here, with the exception of the neighborhood’s bordering streets, which offer some shops and dining options.
In addition to easy access to the interstate and a nearly direct route into downtown Louisville, Wyandotte residents enjoy close proximity to a variety of amenities. Attractions within a five-mile radius of the community include the Louisville International Airport, the University of Louisville, Louisville Zoo, Audubon Country Club and Iroquois Park.
