Merriwether, Louisville is located to the southeast of downtown Louisville. The borders for Merriwether are Shelby Street to the east, CSX to the north, I-65 to the west, and East Brandeis Street to the south.
While residents may need a car or bus to get to some destinations, Merriwether is relatively easy to walk around town if so desired. Bus lines are located close to Merriwether for those who would like to use public transportation.
What is there to do in and around Merriwether? There are many parks located within a mile’s radius. One of the better-known parks is Shelby Park which was named after the first governor of Kentucky, Isaac Shelby. Central Park, also known as DuPont Square, is a 17-acre park that, for a time in 1886, was roofed in and housed Edison’s light bulb. This was a popular attraction for many years.
Most schools in the Jefferson County area belong to one network of schools. The closest schools to Merriwether are the Shelby Elementary School, Noe Middle School and DuPont Manual High School. The University of Louisville is also located right by Merriwether.
Several bookstores are located in the Merriwether area. The University of Louisville Bookstore, Christian Book Nook, and Ekstrom Library are all located within a mile and a half of Merriwether.
Smoketown USA is one of the better-known restaurants in the Merriwether neighborhood. It is famous for its cornbread, sweet tea, and BBQ. Other restaurants near Merriwether include Check’s Cafe and Danny Mac’s Pizza shop.
