The Limerick neighborhood of Louisville lies south of the center of the city. Bordered by Breckinridge Street to the north, Oak Street to the south, Fifth Street to the east, and the CSX Railway tracks to the west, this neighborhood began in the 1860s as a residential enclave for railroad employees, most of whom were transplants from Limerick in Ireland.

This designated historic district is characterized by modest homes made from brick and wood that are known as shotgun houses. This type of home is characterized by narrow structures with doors at both its front and back. Many of them have been preserved or renovated. As in its heyday, the neighborhood of Limerick is a mix of incomes and family types.

Many of the more affluent residents lived in mansions along St. Catherine Street until the railroad’s influence waned and many of the working-class families moved to south Louisville.

Limerick residents have a warm and welcoming spirit. They take pride in the historic nature of their community, often seeking to develop neighborhood programs that will sustain and improve the area.

The Limerick neighborhood is well suited to pedestrian traffic and has been designated one of the 10 most walkable neighborhoods in Louisville. Many Limerick residents enjoy spending time in their neighborhood park, which was once part of the DuPont estate and whose history includes showcasing Thomas Edison‘s light bulb in the 1883 Southern Exposition.

Central Park is a 17-acre municipal park that features trails for walking and running, as well as an outdoor amphitheater that hosts free summer theater performances during the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival. The St. James Art Fair is also held annually near the park.
