Iroquois Neighborhood
Located on the south side, the neighborhood of Iroquois is bounded by Beechmont, Third Street, Kenwood Drive and Hazelwood Avenue. Iroquois Park, a spacious recreational area, serves as a neighborhood focal point. Largely a residential neighborhood built in the 1950s, Iroquois is characterized by a mix of single-family homes and apartments.
The Iroquois neighborhood’s claim to fame is the park that bears its name. Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead (architect of New York’s Central Park), the park was once designated “Jacob’s Folly” as a result of the mayor’s illegal purchase and subsequent troubles with the park. Once old-growth forestland, Olmstead intended the park to be the “Yellowstone of Louisville.” Today Iroquois Park offers scenic views of the city and an amazing variety of activities for local residents.
Southern Parkway (originally Grand Boulevard) leads to an extraordinary municipal park, and Iroquois Park has riding stables, basketball courts, a Frisbee golf course, and an outdoor amphitheater (renovated in 2003) that showcases theatrical performances. Most unusual is its playground equipment, which was designed to be enjoyed even by those who are physically challenged.
Another prominent historical feature near Iroquois is Little Loomhouse, a series of three Victorian-age cabins dating to the late 1800s, which showcase the largest collection of traditional woven textiles in the United States. In 1893 Louisville siblings wrote “Happy Birthday to You,” the most recognized song in the English language, at Little Loomhouse.
The Iroquois neighborhood is also conveniently located near the Louisville International Airport, once a military airbase. Today it serves 11 airlines, as well as cargo services. The Louisville airport is the international hub for UPS’s operations. With more than 20,000 employees, UPS is one of the largest employers in the area, and more than ten billion pounds of cargo pass through the airport each year.
