What do a liberal arts college, a religious pilgrimage, and bourbon whiskey have in common? Georgetown, Kentucky! More specifically, Reverend Elijah Craig, who led an exodus of 600 people in search of religious freedom. They settled the area in 1782 and named their community Lebanon. The name was changed in 1790 in honor of George Washington.
Craig established a school that later became Georgetown College. Georgetown College was chartered in 1849 as the first Baptist college west of the Allegheny Mountains. Today it offers several degree programs. Craig also developed the first bourbon whiskey using the Royal Spring waters in 1789. Kentucky’s largest spring-based water system, the spring is still visible in Royal Spring Park.
Georgetown enjoys a strong economy and job growth thanks to the Georgetown Toyota Plant. Small businesses line the historic downtown, featuring restaurants, antique shops, and more.
Horse farms, historic architecture, and quaint neighborhoods, all just 12 miles north of Lexington, make Georgetown apartment rentals a great choice.
