Twain is a kid-friendly, Iowa City neighborhood that offers entertainment indoors and out, along with a nice escape from city life. Schools, theaters, parks and an airport all call Twain home. The community is in the eastern part of the state.
The youngest students in the neighborhood attend Mark Twain Elementary School, which enrolls approximately 250 students. They attend South East Junior High School before attending City High School. Elizabeth Tate High School is an alternative high school in the neighborhood.
The 28-acre Napoleon Park sits on the west side of Twain neighborhood. The park’s amenities include ball fields, a biking and hiking trail, a playground, picnic shelter, and riverfront access. Weatherby Park has community garden plots that residents can lease in segments. This park also has trails, sports facilities, and athletic fields within its 24 acres. Nearby Mercer Park is equipped for indoor swimming and features a 12-person spa at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center. Six lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields, and playground equipment are also available at the 30-acre park.
Sycamore Center, located near the northern edge of Twain in the Sycamore mall, has 12 screens to display the latest films with digital sound in front of stadium seating. One of the most prominent student-run theaters in the nation, Bijou, is also located in the neighborhood and has been showing independent, art house, foreign, and classic cinema since 1972.
Ideal for quick travel, the Twain neighborhood is just minutes away from the Iowa City Municipal Airport, the second-busiest general aviation airport in the state.
