This community is situated north of Interstate 35 and west of State Highway 28, which means that residents enjoy easy access to the rest of the city. The community of Waterbury is situated to the south, and Windsor Heights is located to the northwest.

One of the many amenities close to home is the Waveland Golf Course, situated just outside of neighborhood bounds to the east. This 18-hole course has been around for nearly 110 years, making it one of the oldest public courses west of the Mississippi River. It is also considered to be one of the nicer courses in Des Moines.

Just to the south of Waveland Woods is a vast expanse of parkland, which includes Ashworth Park, Water Works Park, Raccoon River Park, and Walnut Woods State Park, among others. The amenities offered here include hiking, camping, rafting, and other water sports and outdoor activities. Greenwood Park is also in the vicinity of Waveland Woods; this park offers jogging/biking trails, an amphitheater, and the Des Moines Art Center. It is a beautiful site to enjoy some nature in the middle of the city.

Several additional amenities are just a short drive from Waveland Woods. To the east, along I-235, are two nearby institutions of higher learning – Drake University and Grand View College. There are also several medical facilities situated within a few miles east of the neighborhood, including Mercy Medical Center and Iowa Health Des Moines Methodist Medical Center.

A few miles west of the neighborhood, conveniently located along Highway 28, is the Des Moines International Airport.
