South Park Apartments for Rent

South Park is a convenient, comfortable neighborhood of single-story and raised ranch homes set on small, neat lots. Sidewalks and shade trees create a welcoming atmosphere. The neighborhood is bound by East Park Avenue, South East 14th Street, East McKinley Avenue, and South East 5th Street.

Directly south is a large shopping area with many national retailers, such as Best Buy and Home Depot. About two miles south is Southridge Mall, with major retailers such as Target and Sears, and a large grocery store, HyVee. There are a dozen or more fast food and local restaurants along South East 14th Street.

Within a five-minute drive is the AIB College of Business, offering Associate and Bachelor of Science degrees in business-related fields. It is a non-profit school. Drake University is a private school with excellent national ranking. Two other schools, Des Moines University and Mercy College of Health Sciences, prepare students to work in the health care field.

Some of the city’s favorite parks are nearby. Gray’s Lake and Gray’s Lake Park feature water sports such as sailing and canoeing, and a hiking trail – all within sight of the city skyline. Gray’s Lake offers numerous children’s programs and activities during the summer.

Ewing Park is within walking distance and is a popular park for disc golf. The lilac gardens at Ewing are a springtime delight. The zoo is five minutes away at A. H. Blank Park.

The southern part of Des Moines has many golf courses, too, both public and private. For those who like their golf with history, Waveland Municipal Golf Course, established in 1901, was the first municipal course west of the Mississippi.

Many local sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Iowa State Fairgrounds and several homes in the Sherman Hill Area.
