Fairmont Park Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
The Fairmont Park neighborhood is located just east and slightly north of the Capital Park community. The boundaries are East Euclid Avenue to the north, Hubbell Avenue to the east, Easton Boulevard to the south, and Delaware Avenue to the west. It is just east of Grand View College and just west of Grandview Park. It lies directly north of the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
The community is not a new one, and some of the oldest homes in the area date back to the turn of the 20th century, while the newer ones were built in the late 1950s. In keeping with the needs of the time during which these residences were built, the houses tend to be considerably smaller than what today’s population is likely to expect.
Sizes range from under 700 square feet to just under 1600 square feet — ideal for single people, retired people, or young couples who are just starting out. Streets are lined with mature trees, giving this community located in the heart of the city a wonderful suburban feeling.
The area is convenient to many of Des Moines’ most popular attractions, including the Des Moines Botanical and Environmental Center, located close to the downtown area on 14 acres of land that lies along the east bank of the Des Moines River.
The first expression of an interest in a botanical center began in 1929, when a proposal was made for the construction of a flower conservatory to be placed in one of the city’s parks, where it would be surrounded by formal flower gardens. The city acquired a greenhouse that was located just north of downtown on the west side of the Des Moines River in 1939. That served as the city’s production and display greenhouse and continued to be used until the construction of the Botanical Center was finally completed in 1979.
