Drake Park is located right next to the Drake community. It is a small area within zip code 50311 that surrounds Drake Park, a small neighborhood park. The Basilica of St. John lies just beyond the northeast corner of the Drake Park community. The boundaries of this area are University Avenue to the north, Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway to the east, 24th Street to the west (which serves as the eastern edge of the Drake neighborhood,) and Day Street to the south — which lies just north of I – 235.
The neighborhood is easily distinguished by more historic homes, just as is the case for the Drake neighborhood. This is an area in which virtually all of the dwelling places were built between the years of 1891 and no later than 1920. Most are two story structures, although there are a few single story places, and most have basements, as this is typically the practice with homes that are built in Iowa.
There is a huge variation in the size of these residential properties, and some are just about 1300 square feet, while others exceed 5,500 square feet. Some of the largest single family properties have been converted into multi-family residences, making it possible for students or young working people to live in apartments that were once part of an old home.
Directly east of Drake Park and across the Des Moines River is the Historic East Village. This is an eclectic area of shopping, restaurants and places for entertainment. There are several places where guests can dine and listen to live music. The Grand Piano Bistro offers fine dining with a menu that uses fresh ingredients and a nice selection of local and international wines.
House of Bricks is much less formal, and it has live music performances by a huge range of bands. In addition, there are comedy performances, poetry readings, and good food at affordable prices. It appeals to a young crowd.
