Charlestown, Indiana is located 12 miles north of Jeffersonville and 15 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky. Established in 1808, it was an important mill town, situated on the Ohio River. Today it is the perfect small town, located within minutes of busy downtown Louisville.
Charlestown State Park is 5,100 acres along the Ohio River. It is the third largest park in Indiana and features a variety of scenic trails with Devonian fossil outcrops and the ruins of an ancient stone fortress. There are also campgrounds, fishing, picnic areas, and a playground.
No historic town can go without a few ghost stories, and Charlestown is no exception. The Culbertson Mansion, built in 1867, is a beautiful French Second Empire style mansion listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The carriage house, which suffered a fire in the late 1800s, is used as an annual haunted house attraction.
