Shopping and dining are abundant downtown. Art galleries, boutiques, and antique stores line the streets with most being on Fifth and Sixth Streets. Entertainment is a constant with the presence of the Prairie Capital Convention Center and the Hoogland Center for the Arts. Both utilize local talent as well as national entertainment.

Springfield, Illinois, was the hometown of Abraham Lincoln, and downtown Springfield is most widely known for its rich historical significance concerning the Lincolns.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library is located in downtown Springfield at 112 North Sixth Street between Sixth and Seventh and Washington and Jefferson Streets. The Library archives and displays items of historical value from all over the State of Illinois, but many of its items focus on Abraham Lincoln, his presidency, and his family. Artifacts, maps, and information about the Civil War make the Presidential Library one of Springfield residents’ favorite places to visit.

Lincoln is buried in nearby Oakridge Cemetery. Lincoln’s tomb lies alongside his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, and their children. Several memorials mark the significance of Lincoln’s life and presidency. Before finding a final resting place in 1901, Lincoln’s body had been moved a total of 17 times.

In addition to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Tomb Memorial, residents and visitors to downtown Springfield enjoy visiting the Illinois State Museum and the Old State Capital building.

Downtown Springfield offers something for everyone–modern amenities, easy living, abundant shopping and dining establishments, and historical sites–all within a short walking distance of each other.
