Guide to Decatur

Decatur Apartments For Rent

Name the city that never sleeps! Did you say NYC? Well, sure, but there’s another city lacking sleep: Decatur, Illinois! Decatur is considered one of Central Illinois’ best-kept secrets. It is both busy and quaint, with classic Midwestern charm and affordable living. It has a traditional downtown that wraps around a park and quiet neighborhoods with tree-lined streets and classic brick homes. At the same time, it has a vibrant nightlife, terrific theaters, a variety of museums, and an endless supply of restaurants, pubs, and cafes. Decatur is a booming city with many significant areas and attractions to explore.

Things to Do in Decatur:

Downtown is filled with antique malls, tea rooms, flea markets, shops, boutiques, and more. The food is finger-licking, knee-slapping good! Tap Root is a popular restaurant that serves a purpose — to fill you up! This restaurant is located on Historic Merchant St. and their laid-back vibe and rusty contemporary zeal is a fantastic combination – and so is the asparagus and steak!

Another great place to enjoy once you are living in your new Decatur apartment is Paco’s Sol Bistro. This is the ultimate in steak-and-potatoes fare! The food alone will make you feel lucky that you chose to move to an apartment in Decatur!

The zoo is always a place that children – and adults — can enjoy. While Scovill Zoo is a smaller zoo, it is home to a great variety of animals. Your kids will adore the colorful peacocks and the other exotic birds that wander around the facility. There are even hands-on experiences for the kids to enjoy.  You can ride the train, pet the goats, pop up through the penguin habitat, pet a tortoise, and get up close and personal with reptiles! Not only that, there are tropical birds, alligators, zebras, and much more!

Car lovers, stand up! Decatur has a place that will knock your wheels off: The Chevrolet Hall of Fame Museum! This is the dream destination for car fanatics. It opened in 2009 and contains the hottest Chevys from the 1920s to now, including Indianapolis Pace cars, race cars, and show cars. Cars like the Corvette ZR1 and the last Corvair to be built are inside. Dale Earnhardt’s race cars and many pace cars from the Indy 500 are also part of the collection.

With a strong focus on nature preservation, Decatur offers about 2,000 acres of recreational parks. The parks host about 130 festivals, including the Decatur Celebration, the Arts Festival and Lakeside Music Event, and agricultural exhibitions such as the Farm Progress Show. Lake Decatur is a terrific location for fishing, water sports, boating, picnicking, and more. It has a public marina, restaurants, miniature golf, and parks along its shores.

Decatur has four public golf courses: the Raymond Floyd Signature Golf Club, Red Tail Run, Scovill Golf Club, and Hickory Point Golf Club. If you prefer to shop, the Hickory Point Mall and the unique stores, galleries, and boutiques in Downtown Decatur have you covered.

What to Consider When Moving to Decatur:

Decatur is a very family-friendly city and even has an entire website dedicated to moms’ concerns and how they can accommodate these concerns. In addition to great schools, Decatur is also very green – in fact, the city is quickly becoming a “green community” leader.

When you are done unpacking your new apartment in Decatur and you want to relax, head to the Longcreek Vineyards Winery. This is a time when winding down never felt so rewarding – you are in your new Decatur apartment, and now it’s time to relax and enjoy your fantastic new home!

If you ask locals where their favorite Decatur hotspots are, they may list the following: The Children’s Museum of Illinois, The Downtown Trolley Rides, Fairview Family Aquatic Center, Hickory Point Mall, Macon County Speedway, the Mari-Mann Herbs, Monticello Railway Museum, Next of Kiln, Pla-Mor Pla-Land, Rock Springs Conservation Area, and the Scovill Zoo. These places are all fantastic when it comes to spending time with family and friends.

Millikin University is a private, four-year university located in Decatur. It has an enrollment of about 2,400 and offers programs in arts and sciences, fine arts, professional studies, business, and more. Millikin University offers a number of student services including nonremedial tutoring, placement service, and health service. Millikin University also offers campus safety and security services like 24-hour foot and vehicle patrols.

Decatur is also home to Richland Community College, a public two-year school that was established in 1971. Richland Community College has an enrollment of about 9,000 and offers academic/transfer programs as well as technical and non-credit learning opportunities.

Why Decatur Apartments Are Hot:

Decatur is a manufacturing and technological hub, with several forward-thinking companies located here. Top employers in Decatur include Archer Daniels Midland, Caterpillar Inc., and Decatur Memorial Hospital.

This is literally the land of Lincoln – Decatur was Abraham Lincoln’s first home when he settled in Illinois with his family in 1830. Lincoln gave his very first political speech here, and he argued several cases in the log courthouse that used to stand on the corner of Main Street.

Decatur is a beautiful city filled with fantastic shops, historic sites, great parks, and two rivers. The city offers all types of recreation, including fishing, sailing, boating, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, sledding, golfing, and cross-country skiing.

When you move to an apartment in Decatur, you’ll be living in a busy, “green” city with plenty of Midwestern charm.
