Avalon Park Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
The Avalon Park area – with a name that pays homage to the English Isle of Avalon, believed to be the burial place of legendary King Arthur – was once a swamp. Some of its homes still stand on stilts meant to protect them from bog water. Drained in 1900, the area is now a pleasant, residential, and dry community on Chicago’s south side, 10 miles southeast of the Loop. Boundaries are 76th Street to the north, South Chicago Avenue to the east and 87th Street to the south. Avalon Park incorporates the smaller neighborhoods of Marynook and Stony Island Park. The community is defined by small, single-family homes with well-maintained gardens and lawns.
Residents of the community enjoy its 30-acre namesake park, located in the neighborhood’s southwestern corner. Public transportation is available via multiple bus routes that travel to most destinations in metro Chicago.
