Hunter Army Airfield Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
Located in Chatham County, Georgia, just southwest of Savannah proper, is the neighborhood of Hunter Army Airfield. Covering more than 5,300 acres in size, it is also the location of the Army’s longest runway. The role of the Hunter Army Airfield is as a “power projection platform,” from which troops can be deployed via sea or air.
Given the large quantity of soldiers and their families serving in the area, residential offerings include both military housing and a range of civilian choices, from apartments to single-family homes.
In addition to providing support for social needs like emergency preparedness, local schools, hospitals, and charities, the military also shares recreational amenities with local families who are not affiliated with the military. For example, Hunter Army Airfield’s Lott Island Facility allows for public access to its marinas, golf courses, swimming pools, and bowling alleys.
This area is particularly popular for outdoor pursuits, such as fishing and hunting. Nearby Fort Stewart sponsors an annual fishing derby for children. Lott’s Island is home to an RV park, which offers camping, picnicking, and docking facilities. Many local carnivals, concerts, and other events are also sponsored by the military, but are open to the entire community.
The larger community of Savannah has much to offer Hunter Army Airfield residents, including an architecturally-stunning historic district, more than 20 squares that function much like city parks, and access to sailing and other water activities.
Savannah is a popular tourist destination, with abundant shopping, dining, and entertainment options. It has abundant music, dance, and theater performances, and is the site of lively Savannah Music Festival each year.
