Oakland, located in southwest Atlanta, and incorporating Oakland City and Sandtown, is very close by to the Atlanta Airport. Originally home to the Creek Indians, today the neighborhood is a prosperous and thriving area that is home to mostly upper-middle-class families looking for a safe urban neighborhood with great schools.

This mainly residential community is composed of a mix of apartment complexes and single family homes. Single bedroom apartments average about $700 in rent. A typical three bedroom house in the area average about $150 thousand.

A number of parks are located in the surrounding area, including West End Park, Adair Park, and John A. White Park, and most are easily accessed by the local mass transit system. In addition to open green spaces, playgrounds, and shaded walking trails, John White Park also features a golf course. The Joseph McGhee Tennis Center is located next door.

One of the nearby communities, Sandtown, has the distinction of being the oldest neighborhood in Fulton County, with three widely recognized locations: Sandtown Elementary School (now renamed A. Phillip Randolph Elementary), Sandtown Park, and Sandtown Church. Other significant landmarks in the area include the Wren’s Nest, Herndon Home Museums, and the State Capitol building.

Sports fans in Oakland live within three miles of the city’s main sporting venues: Turner Field, Phillips Arena, and the Georgia Dome. The stadiums, as well as many of the popular malls and other shopping centers in the area, can be easily reached by mass transit.

Several of the city’s best known schools are also located in or close to the Oakland neighborhoods, particularly Spelman College and Morehouse College. Georgia Military College, located on the Fort McPherson Military Base, and The Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training can also be found here, along with campuses for Central Michigan University and Atlanta Technical College.
