The award-winning planned community of Avalon Park in Orlando seeks to evoke life in small town America, with beautiful landscaping and pedestrian-friendly design. The neighborhood capitalizes on the natural environment of the Econlockhatchee River, with more than 200 acres of wetland and some 400 acres of upland preserve.

Centered around the design principles of New Urbanism, the Avalon Park neighborhood incorporates human-scale development, with an urban core accessible to all. Housing types range from single-family dwellings to work-live spaces to town houses, designed to accommodate all ages and family types.

The downtown commercial core offers Avalon Park residents shopping, dining, medical and dental facilities, a YMCA, and professional services, as well as apartment dwellings. Emphasis is given to a look that features Main Street-style storefronts, all within easy walking distance of residential areas.

Recreationally, Avalon Park residents can enjoy a range of parks, including a dog park; Founders and Town Parks, where movies are screened outdoors and residents gather for festivals; Live Oak Park, with wide open spaces; and Tanja King Park, with tennis courts, basketball courts, splash park, baseball fields, and racquetball courts. More than 16 miles of bike trails connect residential areas. The South Village Community Center offers residents a pool, sauna, and gym.

The community of Avalon Park was created to foster interaction, and many club memberships are available to residents. These include traditional groups like Kiwanis and the Rotary Club to hobby affiliations like gardening and theater to less formal groups like Mothers of Preschoolers.

Community events in Avalon Park include a weekly Farmers Market and any number of festivals, usually tied to the seasons, such as Fourth of July, Oktoberfest, and Avalon Aglow, its Christmas festival. The neighborhood recently launched its own free iPhone app, which residents can use to track local happenings.
