Vermont Harbor Neighborhood
Vermont Harbor is a small neighborhood in downtown Los Angeles. West Vernon Avenue is the northern border of Vermont Harbor, and West 54th Street is its southern border. South Normandie Avenue is the western border of the neighborhood, while South Figueroa Street is its eastern border. Despite the name of the neighborhood, it is not close to a beach or any harbor. Instead, the neighborhood gets its name from local streets.
Vermont Square Park, a local community attraction, is located within Vermont Harbor. Exposition Park, a massive, 160-acre park, is located just a mile north of the Vermont Harbor neighborhood. It hosts the Expo Farmer’s Market once per week, and it contains many cultural landmarks of the city. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the California Science Center, and the California African-American Museum are all located within Exposition Park and offer fascinating educational opportunities for the entire family.
The Lou Dantzler Preparatory Charter High School is a highly regarded school that is located in Vermont Harbor. Normandie Avenue Elementary School and Fifty-Second Street Elementary School are also within the community, and they’re known for the outstanding scholastic achievements of their young students. Manual Arts High School and Native Elementary School are also popular neighborhood schools.
Slauson Super Mall is only a mile from the Vermont Harbor community. It is a swap meet that offers a varied selection of clothing and other items for sale. The University Village Shopping Center is only two miles north of the neighborhood. It has a Radio Shack store, Starbucks, and a food court to satisfy many a hungry shopper. A small movie theater popular among Vermont Harbor residents is located at University Village Shopping Center for an afternoon or evening of entertainment for Vermont Harbor locals and others in the area.
