There’s a neighborhood in south Los Angeles that celebrates its African-American heritage with a style and flair like no other — Leimert Park. Leimert Park is the center of the African-American arts scene, with hip galleries, one-of-a-kind boutiques, jazz and blues bands, and amazing restaurants and clubs. Leimert Park is located south of Rodeo Road and north of Vernon Avenue, between Roxton Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard. It is seven miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles, California.
With its funky nightlife and great shopping, Leimert Park attracts the arty and the famous — residents include radio personality Tavis Smiley, artist Mark Bradford, and filmmaker John Singleton. Ella Fitzgerald and former mayor Tom Bradley also called Leimert Park home. As the hub of African-American culture, the shops, coffee houses, and blues clubs feature everything from original poetry readings to jazz bands. With its tree-lined streets and Spanish-style architecture, Leimert Park is as beautiful as it is exciting.
