Vernon/Main is a downtown community of southeastern Los Angeles. The Vernon/Main neighborhood is bordered by West Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to the north and East Gage Avenue to the south. Harbor Freeway/Interstate 110 serves as the neighborhood’s western border, while South Central Avenue serves as the eastern border. East Vernon Avenue and South Main Street run through the community, and they are the neighborhood’s namesake.
The Gilbert W. Lindsay Community Center lies at the northern section of the neighborhood. It offers a playground for children, a fully lit baseball field, outdoor basketball courts, a lit football field, barbecue pits, a lit soccer field and picnic tables. It’s a common hangout for young people of the neighborhood, as is South Park, a sprawling park that’s also in the neighborhood of Vernon/Main.
The Staples Center is a little over three miles from the Vernon/Main neighborhood. It serves as a massive arena for concerts and sports events, such as Lakers games. It was the locale of the infamous Michael Jackson memorial and often serves as a concert venue for the most popular acts.
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is only two miles northwest of Vernon/Main, and it showcases permanent and changing exhibits. It features animals (such as dinosaurs), rocks and minerals. The California African American Museum is about a mile and half northwest of the Vernon/Main neighborhood. The California Science Center, the Grammy Museum and the Hancock Memorial Museum are within a four-mile radius of the community.
