The Owens neighborhood is conveniently located approximately one mile northwest of downtown Mobile, Alabama. Situated in the 36603 zip code of Mobile County, Owens is one of the city’s older and larger neighborhoods.
Owens is bounded by Springhill Avenue to the south and North Broad Street, which extends to Beauregard Street, to the east. To the north, Owens continues to Owens School Park, just south of Conception Street Road. The western border stretches along North Ann Street and extends north to Live Oak Street. The neighborhood contains a mixture of small businesses, single-family homes, apartment buildings, and attached housing units.
Situated just on the other side of the western Owens’ border is Bishop State Community College. Also to the west of Owens, about one mile, are Mobile Infirmary Medical Center and the University of South Alabama Children’s and Women’s Hospital.
Howard Elementary School is located in the Owens’ neighborhood on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Avenue. Calloway Smith Middle School is approximately a half mile to the southeast of Owens, and Murphy High School is about two miles to the southwest.
The Owens’ neighborhood is situated just to the west of the Alabama State Docks and Polecat Bay, which extends south into Mobile Bay. Polecat Bay is a popular waterway for anglers and boaters. Just south of Polecat Bay is the historical USS Battleship Alabama at the Memorial Park. Visitors can explore its decks and history.
Due to its close proximity to the community, a downtown shopping and dining area is a popular destination for Owens’ residents. One street in particular, Dauphin Street, is lined with some of the area’s best specialty shops, restaurants, and small cafes. Various museums are also located in downtown, including Fort Conde Museum, Mobile Carnival Museum, and the Museum of Mobile located on South Royal Street.
