Mertz is a small, primarily residential community of Mobile in the 36606 zip code. With an area of 0.843 square miles and about 800 residents, it is sparsely populated in comparison to Mobile’s average population. The neighborhood is bordered by Interstate 65, Government Boulevard, Halls Mill Road, and a few smaller, local streets.
Most of the homes in the area are single-family detached houses of varying styles and sizes, such as ranchers and Mediterranean-style homes. Approximately fifteen percent of the housing structures of Mertz are mobile homes or other manufactured housing.
Matire Park is just to the northeast of the community. Haven Park, with its open parkland, is one mile to its south, while Fulton Ridge Park is a mile and a half to its east. Luscher Park is a mile and a half to its southeast, and it offers basketball courts, a boat ramp, a community center, a football field, a playground for children, and picnic facilities.
Cultural attractions are also plentiful nearby. The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, a historical mansion and museum, is three and a half miles northeast of Mertz. The Mobile Museum of Art is four miles to its northwest, while the Mobile Carnival Museum, which celebrates the city’s rich Mardi Gras history, is just five miles northeast of Mertz.
Battleship Memorial Park, which draws visitors from across the country, is just over six miles east of the neighborhood. It’s both a military history park and museum, with ships that are historical landmarks. Its USS Alabama Battleship has been the setting of many films that were made in the area, including the popular “Under Siege.”
The Skyline Country Club is just to the southwest of the neighborhood. It offers an 18-hole golf course with sprawling, well-manicured greens and a luxurious clubhouse.
