The Bolton neighborhood in Mobile is characterized by spacious ranch homes on large, heavily shaded lots. Only a couple of miles east are Springdale Mall and Bel Air Shopping Center. Springdale has regional department store Belk’s, Sam’s Club, and other retailers. Bel Air Mall is a more comprehensive mall, offering JC Penney, Target, Abercrombie, and numerous fast food and casual dining establishments.
Educational institutions are equally convenient. The University of South Alabama (USA) and Spring Hill College are both a short drive north. USA offers degrees through the doctoral level to 14,000 students.
Cottage Hill Park and Cottage Hill Tennis Center provide a number of recreational facilities. The Park has athletic fields, including football, softball, baseball, and soccer. The Springhill Recreation Center has basketball courts, a gym, and playgrounds.
Other recreational sites include a number of golf courses and a yacht club. Azalea City Golf Club is a good public course. Mobile Country Club, Skyline Country Club, and Cypress Creek Country Club all offer great play close to home. The Buccaneer Yacht Club, founded in 1928, has a busy regatta schedule year round.
One event draws visitors from around the country each year: Mardi Gras, a two-week festival. Mobile had the first one in 1703. The Mobile Carnival Museum displays elaborate crowns and robes of past royalty.
