Berkleigh Apartments for Rent
The Berkleigh neighborhood is one of elegance, style, and grace. Stately brick Colonials, sprawling moderns, and new contemporaries make for an architecturally interesting neighborhood. Sidewalks run along both sides of the quiet streets, past heavily shaded lawns that are immaculately tended. It is a highly desirable neighborhood, conveniently located to some of the city’s most intriguing areas. Berkleigh is bound by Airport Boulevard, South University Boulevard, Grelot Road, and Hillcrest Road in zip code 36609.
Two major educational institutions are quite close. The largest is the University of South Alabama. USA offers a full range of programs to its 14,000 students, with degrees through doctoral level. Spring Hill College, with 1,500 students, is quite a prestigious school with a long history. Founded in 1830, it is the state’s oldest and the third oldest Jesuit College in the US.
Golf is quite popular in Mobile as the many nearby courses suggest. Azalea City Golf Course, a public course, adjoins the USA campus. Two private clubs are also quite close: Mobile Country Club and Skyline Country Club.
Nearby Mobile Bay is a rich historical area, though significant sites are all around Mobile. Fort Conde, a French fort built in 1723, was later held by British, Spanish, and finally American forces. At nearby Charlotte House, visitors can see original French guns and British cannons.
Other great historic sites include the USS Alabama Battleship, which served in both the Atlantic and Pacific during WW II. Blakely Historic Park is the largest National Register of Historic Places site east of the Mississippi River. It was the site of two Civil War Battles, and the legendary “Hanging Tree,” a massive old oak, can still be seen.
Several historic homes are nearby, including Oakleigh, an 1830s mansion, and The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion. The best known is Bellingrath Gardens and Home.
