Centered in the heart of Alabama, Jefferson County is one of the busiest counties in the state. Birmingham, the county seat, is the largest city in Alabama. It is a college sports hub with the headquarters for the Southeastern Conference located here. Fishing is also a popular sport, and Birmingham is considered a prime bass-fishing region. It is home to the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, the Alabama Ballet, art galleries, museums, and historic sites. The Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark, operated from 1882 until 1971. Sloss has a haunted reputation and has been featured on the television shows Ghost Adventures and Ghost Hunters.
