The refuge is a winter migration stop for waterfowl and is a bird watcher’s paradise. Joe Wheeler State Park, with a variety of facilities, is 25 miles from Oakhurst. It has a full-service lodge and an 18-hole golf course, as well as great boating and fishing.

The University of Alabama in Huntsville is only 10 miles from Oakhurst. The campus has a student enrollment of 7,500. Calhoun Community College and J. F. Drake State Technical College provide two-year degrees.

Huntsville is well known for its space program. Redstone Arsenal and the Marshall Space Flight Center are famous around the world. A number of related businesses have grown along with the space program, putting Huntsville on the international map for high-tech research and development. Cummings Research Park is just one of many. The Space Center is also a great educational facility, especially for children.

As the first capital of the state, Huntsville has a long history, and many historic sites tell the story. One such site is the nearby Burritt on the Mountain mansion and surrounding gardens.
