The present-day city of Dothan was once inhabited by several different tribes of Native Americans. It was not until the early 1830s that the first permanent group of European settlers arrived; however, they had abandoned the area by the time of the Civil War. After the war several developments began popping up, causing the town to finally see some growth. In November 1885 the city of Dothan was named and incorporated.
In 1893 the city gained an extra boost of growth when it secured a stop of the region’s first railroad. The railroad gave local farmers the ability to market and transport their produce to other areas. The harvesting of the forests in the area allowed for the cultivation of cotton as a local staple, but it was destroyed in the early 1900s. After cotton went out, the locals turned to peanuts, which proved to be quite successful. In 1903 Dothan became the county seat of Houston County. The city continued on its upwards path of growth and prosperity throughout the 20th century.
