South Woodlawn is a curved neighborhood in the 35212 zip code located about ten minutes from downtown Birmingham. Its southern border follows the railroad track built beside 5th Avenue South. To the north, 1st Avenue North intersects with 66th Street South, making an angular border. 56th Street South makes up the western boundary, while Brussels Avenue creates the eastern border.

While residential housing is sparse in this area, pockets of residential development line the center of South Woodlawn. Houses here are primarily small shotgun houses, but some follow shingle-style architecture. The neighborhood’s proximity to major highways makes it easily accessible by car.

Patterson Elementary School and Woodlawn High School represent two branches of the Birmingham City School system. The Wee Care Academy lies next door to the elementary. This full-scale daycare center caters to children as young as six weeks and as old as 12 years. The academy operates during the Birmingham school year, and also offers summer camps during non-school months.

South Woodlawn is located just a couple of miles from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Birmingham’s only airport hosts arrivals and departures from American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest Airlines, and other major airlines. Interestingly, all lost luggage is sent to this airport if left unclaimed.

Visitors to the South Woodlawn area don’t have many hotel options to choose from. Within its boundaries are the Relax Inn and Sky Inn. One of the major attractions in the area is the Woodlawn Library, a branch of the Birmingham Public Library that opened in 1905.

Willowwood Park is also close to South Woodlawn, offering tennis and basketball courts as well as a recreational center. The expansive Forest Hill Cemetery and Greenwood Cemetery are also located nearby, offering visitors a more somber look at the city’s history.
