Sherman Heights is a neighborhood in Birmingham. The borders of this community are very irregular. It is spread over quite a large area north and south of Port Birmingham Road. This is an older, established neighborhood, with most of the homes dating from the 1930s and 1940s. Sidewalks and public transportation are nearby. The general area is rural, with lots of trees separating the different neighborhoods. Located west of downtown Birmingham, I-59 makes access to the downtown area quick and easy.
MacAlpin Park is maintained by the City of Birmingham. The park is also home to one of the 18 recreational centers operated by the city and provides activities of visitors of all ages.
The Mount Ararat Baptist Church, which is within the neighborhood, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Jefferson County. The Ensley Branch of the Birmingham Public Library is a short drive from the neighborhood. The first library opened more than 100 years ago in Ensley and became part of the Birmingham system in 1911. It offers patrons reading programs, entertainment, and story time among its many events. Also available are public-use computers and wireless Internet access.
When residents need to go grocery shopping, it is just a short ride to the Winn-Dixie on Bessemer Road. Other area grocery stores are located near Sherman Heights.
For the full mall experience, residents head to Western Hill Mall, a few minutes from the Sherman Heights community. The Burlington Coat Factory and a Wal-Mart Supercenter are the anchors of this mall.
