North Avondale Apartments for Rent

(hide neighborhood information)

North Avondale is a neighborhood with a rich history in Birmingham, Alabama. Not only are the homes there relatively historic, with the large majority built in the early 1900s, but there are also several buildings within a short distance that played a significant role in the development of the city.

Few realize that North Avondale has an incredible story to tell. Several landmarks, among them as the Daniel Payne College off Franklin Street, tell the true story of race relations in Birmingham and how they developed over time. This particular college is no longer in use, but during its prime – from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s – it was one of the only segregated schools in the region.

Another important historic site is the Sloss Furnace site on 1st Avenue. This large industrial furnace, which was built in the late 1800s, is currently used as a museum of industry and is the only blast furnace preserved for public use in the United States.

Living in the big city can sometimes make residents forget about the beauty of nature. Fortunately, residents of Avondale have Avondale Park. The park is beautifully landscaped around a small pond that serves as a centerpiece. Many residents come here to relax with a good book; feed the ducks; or enjoy takeout food from Parkside, a small restaurant across the street. Baseball fields, tennis courts, and other amenities can also be found at the park.

At the corner of Avondale Park are Avondale Library and the historic Avondale United Methodist Church. These popular destinations provide regular foot traffic in the park and make this section of town a busy one.
