Hooper City Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
Hooper City is a Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood. It starts just north of Clayton Park, touching Interstate 65 briefly, and reaches north from there to include Lassiter Mountain Raceway Park. Most of this neighborhood follows a path between these two areas, running along County Road 77.
The largest part of the residences in this neighborhood are located in the southern areas. To serve these residents, the Birmingham Department of Parks and Recreation offers planned activities for all ages at the Hooper City Rec Center located on 4th Street West.
Further north, though there are some residences here and there, thick woods and natural areas are far more common.
This includes the areas surrounding Lassiter Mountain Raceway Park, where woods and nature surround the grounds of the Lassiter drag strip. This raceway was originally opened in 1958, but was closed in 2006. New owners and a revamping of the track re-opened it in 2010. Future plans are to make this a family-friendly vacation destination. These plans include adding batting cages, miniature golf, an arcade, and an RV park.
A number of creeks and smaller lakes populate Hooper City. Five Mile Creek is one of the larger creeks in the local area, winding around the southern part of Lassiter Mountain Raceway Park and across the length of this neighborhood.
Not far south of the raceway is the training facility for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. This is the only training center of its kind in the state of Alabama. Basic courses offered here include the Citizen’s Firearm Clas, and the Basic Deputy Sheriff’s Academy, with more advanced classes also offered.
