Crestwood South Apartments for Rent

Crestwood South is bound by Crestwood Boulevard along the north and Montclair Road along the south, with Trinity Medical Center is located in the southwest. Homes are gracious on large, heavily shaded, carefully landscaped yards. The oldest homes are quite grand; a good many reflect the Craftsman style. There are also newer brick ranch homes and Colonials.

The area borders one of the wealthiest old parts of the city. Homes here were built by industry tycoons when steel mills gave the city its nickname, “The Pittsburg of the South.” The two country clubs just south of Crestwood reflect that wealth and golden era, as do the century old mansions that make up the neighborhood. Their descendants still frequent Mountain Brook Country Club and Birmingham Country Club.

New wealth today comes from the medical and research done at the University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Facilities. UAB is also a major university, offering undergraduate and advanced degrees to almost 20,000 students. The medical facilities here have an international reputation of excellence. UAB is also a lively entertainment district.

Local retail areas include Mountain Brook Village, with specialty boutiques and restaurants in an historic setting. Newer urban retail centers abound. Brookwood Mall, newly updated to keep pace with the outdoor shopping trend, offers national and regional department stores, and many restaurants. The Summit is such a large outdoor mall it offers shuttle service to the hundreds of shops, restaurants, and theaters.

There are many state parks, including the urban Oak Mountain State Park. Tannehill is another favorite, with its old water wheel and stream.

The historic Alabama Theater has been restored to its former glory, and is one of the best examples of fine old theaters in the country.
