The Brownsville Heights of Birmingham is a middle-class neighborhood located directly south of the Penfield Park and Maple Grove neighborhoods. Anglers are near Boyles Gap Lake and the Pawnee Reservoir. The East Lake Park, created in 1886 for steelworkers, is one of the oldest parks in Birmingham. The park attracts walkers and sunbathers. East Lake, the 45-acre lake within the park, is a favorite place to fish.
For a quick suburban getaway, the neighborhood is approximately 15 miles east of Leeds. It is the location of the Barber Motorsports Park and the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. Once called “One of the most beautiful race tracks in North America” by Road and Track magazine, the 740-acre Barber Motorsports Park was opened in January 2003 and named after landowner and racing enthusiast George A. Barber. The track is 2.38 miles long and is well known for car and motorcycle racing. The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum has exhibits of over 1,200 vintage and modern motorcycles. It also has over 30 vintage racecars on display.
