Airport Highlands is a Birmingham neighborhood located directly south of Brownsville Heights. 90th Place North, Airport Road, 12th Avenue North and East Lake Boulevard are neighborhood boundaries. The community covers 3.23 square miles and has houses, townhouses, apartments and mobile homes. Mostly families live in Airport Highlands, and the average resident is 36 years old.

Residents are close to highways 11, 20, 59 and 75 and have an easy commute by personal vehicle. MAX, a public transit system for Jefferson County, provides buses for residents and tourists. The neighborhood is near Birmingham’s Amtrak station and the Birmingham International Airport.

Airport Highlands is near East Lake Park. One of Birmingham’s oldest parks, it has a stocked fishing lake and a golf course. East Lake Park has a one-mile loop meant for year-round hiking and walking.

The family-friendly Roebuck Municipal Golf Course is nearby. This public golf course has two small lakes and a creek.

The William B. Bankhead National Forest is an 180,000-acre old growth hardwood forest with Alabama’s only nationally designated wild and scenic river, the Sipsey. The forest is only 20 miles northwest of Birmingham. The Sipsey Wilderness and the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River is nearby.

Lewis Smith Lake has over 500 miles of tree-lined shore. It is close to the cities of Birmingham and Huntsville for a brief escape from suburban life. Alabama Adventure is a family theme park with thrill rides. The Bessemer Hall of History Museum was a former railroad depot. It has exhibits from fossils to pieces from Birmingham’s industrial past.
