Spokane at a Glance
Browne’s Addition Neighborhood
The Browne’s Addition neighborhood of Spokane, Washington was the place to be in the beginning of the 20th century. This was where the wealthy lived and the most prestigious neighborhood in the area. Today it is well preserved, and most of the mansions are still standing and in use. Almost all of them are on the National Historic Register. The homes were built around Spokane’s first park, the Coeur D’Alene. This park was recently updated with new playground equipment. The nine-acre park looks like it did when it was opened at the turn of the 19th century.
The northern border of this neighborhood is West Riverside Avenue. The southern border follows South Sunset Boulevard at the railroad right-of-way. The eastern border is South Walnut Street. The western border follows the hills and runs along the border of Overlook Park.
This neighborhood is a destination for tourists, and there are tours of the area. It’s also great for those who want to live in Browne’s Addition, as there are many apartments, some in historical buildings, and also cottages mixed in with the mansions. This area has its own brand of charm and appeal.
There is a small area on West Pacific Avenue and South Cannon Street where there are some boutiques and dining establishments. Other business and dining experiences can be found on South Sunset Boulevard. The Spokane Transit Authority has many routes in the area that cover the entire Spokane area.
It seems not much has changed over the years. Browne’s Addition may still be the most prestigious place to live in Spokane.
