Portland at a Glance
Eliot Neighborhood
The Eliot neighborhood straddles North and Northeast Portland, bordered by the Willamette River on the west, Fremont Street on the north, Seventh Avenue on the east, and Broadway on the south. Eliot is a mixed-use neighborhood, with the East Bank Industrial Complex, Legacy Emanuel Hospital, the shipyards, and Interstate 5 at the west end, with a few blocks of classic craftsman, Queen Anne, and Old Portland-style homes at the east end.
Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard runs north and south through the neighborhood, offering urban retail shops and restaurants one block west of Seventh Avenue. The area offers recently constructed and redeveloped town homes, condominiums, and apartments for rent, as well as single-family homes. Dawson Park, with its distinctive gazebo, and Albina Park are popular gathering spots for residents. The trendy Pearl District is just across the Broadway Bridge, and downtown Portland is a few minutes away by car.
Eliot’s history is one of the most interesting among Portland’s neighborhoods. Norwegian settlers claimed the land in the 1870s. It is named for Rev. Thomas Eliot, who devoted his life to community service, heading up many organizations that included the Children’s Home, the Oregon Humane Society, the Art Association, and the Library Association.
During the 1910s and 1920s, Portland’s minority citizens settled in the Eliot neighborhood. After World War II, the area was known as “Jumptown” for its upbeat and lively jazz scene. Some of the all-time greats of jazz, like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Dizzie Gillespie, and Louis Armstrong performed in the clubs on Williams Avenue. Eliot’s rich cultural tradition continues today in the lounges, restaurants, coffee houses, and barbecue establishments along North Williams Avenue and Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
