Hosford – Abernethy Neighborhood

Hosford Abernethy is southeast of downtown Portland. Eight of its elm-and-maple-lined streets terminate in a central parkway known as Ladd’s Rose Garden Circle and Squares. The residences here are small-to-medium-sized older homes, intermingled with quaint shops and cafes.

There are both public and Catholic schools in the area as well as specialty schools such as the Buckman Arts Focus Elementary School. The Iorio Restaurant has won numerous awards for their Italian food and was also rated the “Best Romantic Restaurant” over a 4-year period beginning in 2007 as well as the “Best Restaurant” in 2010.

Hotels nearby include the Morrison Hotel, the Jupiter Hotel and the Garden Guest House on Hawthorne. Portland Golf Club, Eastmoreland Golf Course and Rose City Golf Course are among the golf courses in the area. The Rose Garden Arena is the home of the NBA Portland Trail Blazers as well as concerts, Disney shows, and special events throughout the year.

At Portland’s Children’s Museum, older kids can use their drawing, drilling, and gluing skills to make their own creations. Younger kids and toddlers can play in the rubber gravel-filled “Dig Pit.”

The huge Oregon Zoo has three trains (including a steam train) to carry visitors around. The zoo’s Great Northwest Exhibit is the popular highlight for visitors.

The Mount Hood Meadows Ski Resort is not far from Hosford-Abernathy. Here novices can get ski or snowboard lessons, and experts can try their luck on some of their trails, many of which wind challenging routes through woods and along cliffs.
