Hayden Island Neighborhood
Hayden Island is just north of Portland on the Columbia River, connected to Oregon and Washington by Highway I-5. The western two-thirds of the long narrow island is uninhabited forest, while the eastern third is a shopping and holiday destination. Bargain hunters from Washington come south to shop in sales-tax-free Oregon. Hayden Island also has a wide variety of housing.
The island, including the former Tomahawk Island now joined to it, has two mobile-home communities and an RV park. The largest houseboat community in the Portland area is there, along with many apartments and condominiums. Hayden Island also has pleasure-boat marinas and custom waterfront homes.
Jantzen Beach was an amusement park on the island. Opened in 1928, it drew visitors for 42 years with swimming pools, a roller coaster, and other rides. The park carousel is now a centerpiece of the Jantzen Beach Shopping Center.
Houseboat communities appeared on the island in the 1940s, mobile home parks opened in the 1950s, and the first condominiums appeared in the 1960s. Residences were often second homes then, but most current residents live on the island year-round.
Children from Hayden Island attend Faubion Elementary in the Concordia neighborhood from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. They continue to Roosevelt or Jefferson High School. Portland has a number of acclaimed universities where children can further educational goals.
Parents commute via Highway 5 or board the light rail at Delta Park, less than a mile south of the island.
People who live on Hayden Island enjoy a beautiful environment with great views. Though their roads are sometimes busy with shoppers or vacationers, they still enjoy one of the highest qualities of life in Portland.
